Boston College has lost six straight games. The Eagles visit Tallahassee tonight as 11.5-point underdogs. And somewhere on campus, someone is probably still wondering how a program that produced Jerome Robinson’s 46-point explosion against Notre Dame in 2018 has slipped this far down the ACC food chain.
The numbers tell a grim story. BC sits at 9-16 overall and 2-10 in conference play and faces a Florida State team that has won four of its last five. The Eagles need a win tonight against the Seminoles (12-13, 5-7 ACC) just to keep the season from becoming a complete write-off.
Fred Payne Can’t Carry This Team Alone
Sophomore guard Fred Payne has been the one bright spot in an otherwise bleak winter in Chestnut Hill. He’s averaging 15.1 points per game and has scored in double figures in 11 consecutive outings, including a career-high 26 points in an overtime win against Syracuse back in January. Against California on Saturday, Payne led the Eagles with 16 points in an 86-75 home loss where Cal drilled 14 three-pointers and the Eagles never had an answer.
The problem is everything around him. Donald Hand Jr., last season’s ACC Most Improved Player who returned expecting to lead BC into the upper half of the conference, suffered a leg injury against Stanford on Feb. 11 and has missed the last two games. His absence leaves a gaping hole in both scoring and leadership. Before the injury, Hand was averaging 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Without him, BC has looked even more lost offensively.
The home losses to Stanford, 70-64, and Cal have been particularly painful. BC actually rallied from 14 down against the Cardinal and tied the game at halftime, only to fall apart in the second half with Hand watching from the locker room. Against Cal, the Eagles trailed by 20 at multiple points as the Golden Bears shot 56% from the floor.
Head coach Earl Grant acknowledged after the Stanford loss that his team played hard without their best player for 30 minutes. That effort hasn’t translated to wins.
Tonight’s Game Could Define the Rest of the Season
Florida State presents a daunting challenge. The Seminoles routed Virginia Tech by 23 points on Saturday and have found their footing after a rocky stretch in January. Robert McCray leads FSU at 14.7 points and 6.0 assists per game.
BC won the last meeting between these teams, 77-76, at Conte Forum on Feb. 1, 2025. That feels like ancient history now.
The Eagles rank fourth in the ACC in scoring defense (69.3 points allowed) and third in blocks per game (4.4), with Jayden Hastings anchoring that effort. But defense alone can’t save a team that struggles to generate consistent offense. BC has shot poorly from three-point range throughout this losing streak and hasn’t found secondary scoring behind Payne.
Four of BC’s final six regular season games are on the road. A loss tonight would push the Eagles further toward the bottom of the 18-team ACC standings and make even an NIT bid seem optimistic. Last season, Grant guided BC to 20 wins and the second round of the NIT. The roster turnover since then has been brutal, and it shows.
For Boston College, tonight’s game in Tallahassee isn’t about bubble implications or bracketology scenarios. It’s about avoiding a seventh straight loss and finding some shred of momentum before the season spirals completely out of reach. Tipoff is 6 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
